Spare Key Supplied for Citroën Relay – Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

We were recently called out to supply a spare remote key for a customer’s 2013 Citroën Relay. The job went smoothly — we cut and programmed the new remote key on-site, giving the customer peace of mind knowing they now have a reliable backup.

But while the customer still had a working key, it was a good reminder of how important it is not to wait until you're down to your last key, especially with vehicles that use Fiat-based immobiliser systems like the Citroën Relay, Peugeot Boxer, and Fiat Ducato.

Why You Should Always Have Two Working Keys

Many Fiat-based systems used in these vans are becoming increasingly restricted by dealerships, who are locking the BCM (Body Control Module) to prevent independent access. In an all keys lost situation, this means locksmiths are often unable to retrieve the immobiliser data required to program new keys via standard diagnostic tools.

When this happens, your only option may be to take the vehicle to the main dealer — which often involves:

  • Expensive towing costs

  • Lengthy wait times

  • Higher dealer prices for replacement keys

In some cases, the vehicle can be off the road for days — not ideal if you rely on it for work.

Avoid Dealer Lockouts – Get a Spare Key While You Can

By having two working keys, you protect yourself from being locked out of your own van — both physically and digitally. With at least one working key, most independent locksmiths can still access the vehicle’s systems and program additional keys at your convenience, wherever you are.
